The MLX goes where a backpack cannot. Handheld on a harness, 3.6 kg, 640,000 points per second and 5 mm local accuracy up to 50 metres, it is built for plant rooms, ceiling voids, crawl spaces and stairwells. That produces many short runs in cramped places rather than one long sweep through an open hall, and it needs a different treatment afterwards. 360GEO computes the trajectory, aligns the runs against each other, colourises, anonymises and publishes the result in your own GEORIZON environment.
Handheld capture in tight spaces produces a different dataset than a walk through an open hall. Runs are short, they overlap heavily, and the same riser or corridor often gets recorded more than once because you could not reach everything in one go. The work is therefore not only in processing each run but in aligning them against one another, so that a pipe recorded from two sides ends up in one place rather than two. That multi-run alignment is a standard part of what we do, not an extra, and it is the reason MLX data needs its own workflow rather than the one you would use for a VLX.
Be aware that the two pricing models reward opposite shapes of project. NavVis calculates processing units on the scanned area in square metres, with a rate that depends on device and processing mode, and VLX and MLX both require processing units to be estimated up front. We price on the trajectory of the recording. In a wide open space you cover a lot of area with little walking, and our model is clearly favourable. In a dense plant room the reverse holds: small area, long path. We are not going to claim we are cheaper everywhere, because that depends on the ratio between floor area and walked distance in your project. Most MLX work is part of something larger: a building inside a site, a station inside a rail corridor, a substation inside a network. In NavVis IVION the indoor scan lives on its own. In GEORIZON it sits in the same viewer as the mobile mapping of the street outside, the oblique imagery of the roof and the aerial LiDAR of the surroundings, in the same coordinate system, measurable across the boundary. That is usually the reason people move the data rather than the licence cost: not that the indoor viewer is poor, but that the indoor data is stranded.
Worth knowing before you plan a long project. NavVis states that with an expired System Software subscription you can still scan, but IVION Processing will not run, and data can only be processed while the subscription is valid. Desktop Processing is licensed against the serial number of the device with its own update subscription; when that expires you can no longer process that device’s data with the current software. Note also that the MLX requires NavVis IVION 11.3.2 or higher, so an older instance is not automatically ready for it. Data we deliver is in open formats and does not stop being readable when a contract does.
