A 3D mesh viewer that complements your point cloud

A point cloud is the most honest record of what was measured, but not always the most readable. For anyone without daily experience of geodata, a cloud of separate points stays hard to interpret. A mesh fills that gap: a continuous surface with imagery draped over it, so buildings, roads and terrain look the way you recognise them. How a mesh is built, and what it is and is not

A mesh is built from the same source as the rest of your dataset: from the point cloud, from overlapping imagery, or from both. The surface is then clad with imagery, so facades, road surface and vegetation carry their own texture. What matters is what this means for reliability: where the source is dense and complete, the surface follows reality closely, but where the source has gaps, behind an obstacle or on a roof plane that was never seen, the model fills those gaps with an assumption. A mesh is therefore excellent for forming a picture and for communication, while the point cloud remains the source for measurement that really counts.

Keeping large areas workable

A textured model of a district or a route quickly becomes too heavy to load in one go. As with the point cloud, we therefore deliver the mesh in levels of detail: a simplified surface with coarse texture at a distance, full detail around your viewpoint once you zoom in. The viewer retrieves only what falls within the view, so you can move smoothly from an overview of the whole area to a single facade. Because the model sits in the same frame as your other layers, you can combine it with the map, the point cloud and the panorama, and overlay captures from different years to see what has changed.

Sharing with parties unused to geodata

The strongest use of a mesh is the conversation: with a decision maker, a resident, a contractor or a partner who is not used to point clouds. You share a direct link to a viewpoint in the model and they open it in the browser, without an installation, a licence or an explanation beforehand. Access is arranged per user or through single sign-on, and where the data may not leave your own environment an on-premises deployment is possible. To use the model outside GEORIZON, export can be arranged. Organisations including ProRail (SpoorInBeeld), the municipality of Nijmegen and Kempkes Landmeten work with their geodata this way.
